COMMON QUESTIONS
Frequently Asked Questions
Clear answers help property owners make better decisions about timing, preparation, coatings, and long-term maintenance.
Deck preparation varies by wood type, age, condition, and existing coating. The process commonly includes cleaning to remove organic growth and dead wood fibers, brightening to neutralize and open the wood pores, drying, and sanding before stain is applied.
Most decks need some form of cleaning or maintenance every one to two years. The actual stain cycle depends on product type, sunlight, moisture, pool exposure, and foot traffic.
In general, it is safest to use a compatible product or strip the existing coating back to bare wood first. For the most consistent results, we often prefer to start fresh with a known coating system.
Many exterior wood stains are designed to penetrate and allow the wood to breathe. Paint forms a film over the surface and may trap moisture, peel, or flake over time, which can make future maintenance more difficult.
These terms describe increasing levels of pigment. Transparent stains show the most wood grain. Semi-transparent and semi-solid stains add more color and hide more imperfections. Solid stains provide the most coverage and are often used over existing solid coatings or when required by an HOA.
Clear sealers are generally not recommended for areas with significant sun exposure because they contain little or no pigment to help protect the wood from ultraviolet rays.
